Why do my iPhone photos open as HEIC instead of JPG?

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos using the HEIC format by default because it produces smaller files at the same quality. Many non-Apple apps and older software don't support it, which is why converting to JPG is often needed.

Will I lose photo quality converting to JPG?

There's a small amount of quality loss going from HEIC to JPG, since both use lossy compression, but it's set high enough (90%) that it's not noticeable for normal viewing, printing, or sharing.

Does this work with Live Photos?

This tool converts the still HEIC image. The motion component of a Live Photo (a separate video file) isn't included in the JPG output.

Are my files kept private?
